Turnitin
What it really means
The software most UK universities use to receive assignments and check them for similarity with other texts. A similarity score is normal — copied sentences without references are the problem.
Context, tips & common mistakes
Turnitin produces a similarity score, and the score is not a verdict: it flags matched text including perfectly legitimate quotes, references and common phrases, and a human academic interprets the report. Thirty per cent of properly quoted material is fine; eight per cent of copied argument is misconduct. So do not chase a magic low number — write honestly and reference properly.
The services promising to 'beat Turnitin' — paraphrasing tools, essay mills, 'guaranteed original' ghostwriters — are the real danger. Contract cheating is academic misconduct at the expulsion end of the scale, detection methods now target writing-style anomalies rather than just text matching, and essay mills have a documented sideline in blackmailing former customers. If your course allows a draft self-check, use that; it is the only legitimate version of the idea.
