What this site is

UK Decoded explains British English and everyday life in the United Kingdom for people who are new to the country — students, tourists, workers and family visitors. British phrases often cannot be understood literally: "You alright?" is usually a greeting, "not bad" often means "quite good", and a rental advert full of abbreviations like "PCM" and "en suite" can be baffling.

The site has two kinds of content: over a thousand short glossary entries (each with a plain-English meaning, a Simplified Chinese translation, an example conversation and a suggested reply) and a growing library of in-depth guides covering the practical systems newcomers must navigate — renting, payslips, the NHS, transport, university culture and more.

Who owns and runs the site

UK Decoded is owned and operated by Helium22 Ltd - www.helium22.com, a UK-based publisher. It is written and maintained by a small editorial team led by the site's founder, working with contributors who have first-hand experience of arriving in and settling into the UK. We are independent: no government body, university or advertiser has any say in what our entries and guides say. You can reach the team at support@helium22.com or via the contact page.

How content is written and checked

• Drafting: entries and guides are drafted against the concept list for each topic, then edited for plain English readable at learner level.
• Fact-checking: anything factual — healthcare access, tenancy rules, employment rights, transport pricing — is checked against the relevant official source (GOV.UK, the NHS, ACAS, Shelter, Citizens Advice, Transport for London, National Rail, UKCISA) and those sources are linked visibly on the page so you can verify them yourself.
• Dating: entries and guides carry a "last checked" date. When rules or prices change we update the page and the date; where figures change frequently we deliberately link to the official source rather than quoting numbers that would go stale.
• Translations: the Simplified Chinese translations are written alongside the English rather than machine-generated afterwards, and are reviewed for natural phrasing. Interface translations exist in other languages, but the editorial content itself is currently published in English and Chinese only — we would rather offer two languages done properly than fifteen done badly.
• Cultural claims: descriptions of politeness, customs and etiquette are presented as common tendencies ("usually", "many British people"), never as absolute rules. Britain varies by region, generation and person.

Corrections

Language changes and rules change. If you spot an explanation that is wrong, out of date, or a translation that reads unnaturally, please tell us via the contact page — every report is read, and corrections are made to the page itself (with the "last checked" date updated). This correction loop is how the site improves.

What this site is not

UK Decoded is a language and culture guide, not an advice service. We do not provide legal, immigration, financial or medical advice, and no page here should be relied on as such. For anything official — visas, tenancy disputes, tax, healthcare decisions — always check the official sources such as GOV.UK, UKCISA and the NHS, or a qualified professional.

How the site is funded

The site is free to use. It may display advertising (including Google AdSense) and clearly-disclosed affiliate links. Advertising never changes what an entry or guide says, advertisers have no editorial input, and ad cookies are only set with your consent.
