A member of staff assigned to support you personally during your degree — with study problems, wellbeing, or references. Meet them at least once; they write your job references later.

Your personal tutor is the named academic responsible for you as a person rather than a module — the right first stop when money, health, housing or homesickness starts touching your studies, and the person who unlocks extensions, support services and formal processes before a problem becomes a crisis. Reply to their check-in emails even when things are fine; a tutor who knows you can act quickly when things are not.
There is a career angle too: this is the academic most likely to write your references for jobs and further study. A tutor who has met you twice a term for three years writes a specific, warm letter; one who could not pick you out of a lineup writes a form letter. Meet them early and give them material.
