First class / standard class

Neutral Neutral

What it really means

UK trains have standard class (normal seats) and first class (bigger seats, sometimes free drinks). A standard ticket is NOT valid in first class — sitting there without the right ticket can mean a penalty fare.

Example conversation

A: These seats are much nicer, let us sit here. B: Careful, this is first class. Our tickets are standard, we could get a penalty fare.
