What it really means
Insurance that covers YOUR belongings (laptop, phone, bike) against theft, fire or water damage. The landlord's insurance covers the building only, not your things. It is optional but cheap, and worth considering for expensive items.
Example conversation
A: My bike was stolen from the shed.
B: Did you have contents insurance? The landlord’s policy won’t cover your belongings.
