What it really means

Usually a soft "no". "Might", "maybe" and "possibly" in answers to invitations often mean the person will not come but does not want to refuse directly. If they truly plan to come, they usually ask for details like time and place.

Chinese explanation

通常是委婉的"不去"。回应邀请时的 might、maybe、possibly 多半表示不会来，只是不想直接拒绝。真想来的人一般会追问时间地点等细节。

Example conversation

A: We're all going to the pub after class. Coming? B: I might join you later. A: No worries — text me if you do.
