What it really means
If someone is walking towards the lift (elevator), it's polite to hold the doors for them, and they'll thank you. Letting the doors close in someone's face — especially while making eye contact — is quietly judged. Inside, Brits usually face the doors and say little; small talk in lifts is minimal.
Chinese explanation
有人朝电梯走来时，帮忙按住门是礼貌的做法，对方会道谢。当着别人的面（尤其还有眼神接触时）让电梯门关上，会被暗暗鄙视。在电梯里，英国人一般面朝门、很少说话；电梯里的寒暄非常少。
