Calling without messaging first
Informal Depends on context
What it really means
Among younger British people especially, a phone call out of nowhere can feel intrusive — many prefer a text first: "Free for a quick call?" Unannounced calls are fine for close family, emergencies, and older people who simply prefer phoning. For everyone else, message first and let them choose the moment.
Example conversation
A: Why didn't you pick up? I rang you three times.
B: Sorry — unknown midday calls stress me out. Text me first next time and I'll answer.
