What it really means
UK marks look low to many international students: 70+ is excellent, 60s is good, 50s is average, 40 is a pass. Marks above 80 are rare in essay subjects. A 65 is a result to be pleased with, not a failure.
Context, tips & common mistakes
The practical adjustment is emotional as much as academic: students arriving from systems where 85 is normal can spend a first term believing they are failing. Calibrate early: in essay-based subjects most good work lands in the 60s, marks above 80 are genuinely rare, and a 72 may be the best mark in the seminar group. Quantitative subjects (maths, some sciences) do award high marks for fully correct work, so compare yourself within your own discipline, not against a friend on another course. Two follow-on traps: when reporting marks home or to employers abroad, send the classification (2:1, Merit) with an explanation rather than the raw percentage, or a 65 will look mediocre to someone reading it on a 100-point school scale; and when tutors write "good work" next to a 64, they mean it — chasing 90s by writing more is usually the wrong strategy, while addressing the specific feedback is what moves you from 64 to 70.
