Freshers' week is a firehose of events, sign-up fairs and cheap nights out — useful for surface-mapping your university, but calibrate expectations: the friendships that last usually form gradually through courses, societies and flatkitchens across the whole first term, so a quiet freshers' week predicts nothing. There is also zero obligation to drink; alternative and alcohol-free events are now standard, and 'I don't drink' needs no elaboration.
Do the boring tasks the crowds skip: register with the local GP surgery in week one while healthy (the inevitable 'freshers' flu' is much easier to handle when already registered), locate your department and personal tutor, and watch your budget — freshers' pricing is engineered to feel cheap while draining a loan instalment remarkably fast.
