Context, tips & common mistakes
UK exam periods are concentrated blocks — typically January and May/June — with timetables published only weeks ahead, which is why booking flights home before the timetable lands is the most expensive optimism on campus. Venues are often unfamiliar sports halls across town: visit yours beforehand, know your candidate number (exams are marked anonymously), and check the permitted-items rules — calculators, dictionaries and phones each have regulations, and a phone found in a pocket mid-exam is a misconduct case even if unused.
Two exams in one day happens and is not grounds for complaint; clashes (two exams same hour) are — report them the day the timetable appears. Students entitled to adjustments — extra time, separate rooms, for disabilities including dyslexia and anxiety — must register with disability services well in advance, not exam week. If illness strikes on the day, the mitigating circumstances process with same-day medical evidence beats heroically sitting the paper badly.
