Contact hours vary enormously by subject — a humanities degree may timetable eight hours a week while medicine or engineering fills most days — and this is by design, not neglect: the missing hours are budgeted as independent study, with a full-time degree officially treated as roughly 35-40 hours of total work per week. Newcomers from lecture-heavy systems often make one of two mistakes: treating the free time as actual free time until deadlines land all at once, or judging a course as poor value because the timetable looks empty. Before choosing a course, you can compare published contact-hours and student-satisfaction data for specific degrees on the official Discover Uni service. Once enrolled, the reading list is the real timetable: seminar preparation is assumed, and turning up to a two-hour seminar without having done the reading wastes the contact time you do get. Attendance may also be monitored — for international students on a Student visa, universities are required to track engagement.
