Standing order
STAN-ding OR-der
Neutral Neutral
What it really means
An instruction to your bank to pay a fixed amount regularly, for example your rent on the 1st of each month. You control it, unlike a Direct Debit which the company controls. Most tenants pay rent by standing order.
Example conversation
A: How should I pay the rent?
B: Just set up a standing order for the 1st of every month.
