A yearly tax paid to the local council for services like rubbish collection and street lighting, usually paid monthly. Tenants normally pay it on top of rent unless the advert says it is included. Full-time students can usually get an exemption via GOV.UK.

Council tax is one of the few household bills where missing payments escalates quickly: after a reminder, the council can demand the whole year's balance at once and then apply to court, adding costs — so if you are struggling, contact the council early and ask to spread payments over twelve months instead of ten. Registering is your job, not the landlord's, in most private tenancies: tell the council when you move in and when you leave, or bills in your name can follow you. Mixed households trip people up — one non-student living with students usually means a bill arrives, though often with a 25 per cent single-person style discount. Amounts vary a lot between councils for the same band, so check the local figure before choosing between two flats in different areas. Rules and discounts differ again in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (which uses rates, not council tax).
