Perhaps you'd like to…

Neutral Polite

What it really means

Sounds like an invitation, but it is often a polite instruction. A teacher saying "perhaps you'd like to start your essay" means "start now". From equals it can be a genuine suggestion.

Example conversation

A: Perhaps you'd like to share your answer with the class, James? B: Er, sorry — I wasn't listening.

What you could say back

“Of course — shall I go ahead now?”
